Sunday July 1st 2007 - Coeur d'Alene, Idaho to Glendive, Montana

Our ‘hotel’ did not have an outdoor pool, but did have a continental breakfast, which we contemplated checking out, but decided against. We were up and moving by 8am. So much easier really, not having to haul our luggage up to a room and back down. We save loads of time on the not having to shower or check-out business, not to mention a few bucks. Great bargain on the unadvertised hotel parking lot!

Montana is another really big state. We left Coeur d’Alene, Idaho about 8am, reaching the Montana border probably within 45 minutes. From there it took us all day to travel across the state to Glendive, with minimal but important stops. We stopped for a nice lunch in Missoula and found our Applebees in Billings for our July 1st supper. Last year on our trip to Virginia, we happened to have dinner at Applebees on July 1st, and were surprised when the Wal-Mart next door was having fireworks – on our Canadian holiday! So we figured it’d be funny to eat an Applebees again this year.

Funny how that worked out – we’d been thinking of Applebees for a couple days now (Derek had asked 2 guys at the gas station in Oregon last night where the closest Applebees was and they just chuckled at him - I guess it was quite far away!) – and Billings was the first we’d seen on our whole trip! And it happened to be in the Wal-Mart parking lot! But no fireworks, of course we might have been just too early.
The place was hard enough to find - but it found us!

We continued from there to Miles City (2 hours) and then on to Glendive (another hour).

We found the Days Inn for $62 fairly quickly and jumped on it – to not waste more time searching – and get rested for one more day of driving. We’re looking at about 7½ hours to the farm to pick up Oscar and 2 hours back to Winnipeg.

Hopefully there’s still a small corner in the car for the cat. ;-)

Saturday June 30th 2007 - Grants Pass, Oregon to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

Had an early start – we were up about 8am and down for breakfast before it was closing and on the road by 10am. It was nice to be making use of the daylight hours!

Had decided last night that we need to make tracks as quick as possible, so sticking to the Interstate, which meant no Crater Lake for me! It’s been added to the “B” List – the list of things we don’t do but think we’d like to someday!

We stopped in Roseburg for fuel and a small search for flavored water.

We stopped in Salem - the capital city of Oregon.

Since Lincoln City, Derek had wished he had bought a couple more items that he’d seen at that time – he realized they were really good deals.

Driving up to Portland, I reviewed the free magazine I had picked up about the city. Read an article about the Columbia Sportswear store being founded in Portland – and how there was an Outlet Store in a suburb of the city (Sellwood). They did not have the exact shoes he had seen and wished he had gotten, but alas – there was another Outlet store just in the next area (Lake Oswego)! So he set out to find our second outlet store in Portland. They also did not have the shoes, but we managed to find deals at every stop. Shopping with the deals and no tax is so much fun!

We made a quick visit to the downtown area – saw some of the buildings and all the construction (street and some buildings). It is amazing how these big American cities move the traffic up and out. You can be in the middle of downtown one minute and cruising on the interstate five minutes later (probably different with rush hours).

We headed east along the southern side of the Columbia River. The scenery is beautiful with the reddish-colored cliffs and rolling, curving highways. We stopped a couple times – to look out over the river to Washington, and see a couple dams (one in The Dalles).

Oregon is very big – took forever to drive along this stretch and make it back into Washington. Makes you realize how big the USA is (and Canada). So much to see…

We stopped briefly in Tri-Rivers at a Wal-Mart to see if they had the same type of battery I use – they did not. We also stopped quickly at Jack in the Box to grab a quick bite to eat.

We drove up to Spokane, only to find that every place was completely booked. We drove on to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho … another ½ hour … only to find the same thing. The one hotel lady said that the hotels are usually quite busy on weekends and Hoopfest was also happening in Spokane – some basketball tournament with 3 players per team. So there was no room for us.

So we selected the Best Western as our place to park. We were both tired and didn’t want to head into the mountains and the unknown being all sleepy. Much preferred to drive in the daylight anyway. We found a great parking spot and called it a night!

Friday June 29th 2007 - North Bend OR to Crescent City, CA to Grants Pass OR

This morning started a bit later once again – we hurried down to breakfast and then hurried to pack up and get out. There was a spa at the hotel – with a hot tub and an exercise room – but they didn’t look to be anything special anyway, so no loss that we didn’t have a chance to use them.

We left Coos Bay

We knew we really had to start thinking about heading back – pretty far away from home.

Headed south to California!

Had lunch/dinner at Denny’s in Crescent City, California!

We checked out the bay and walked up to a lighthouse up on a cliff.

Headed north, through a windy, narrow road through the mountains.

Made it to Grants Pass and decided to stop and get a good rest.

We stayed at the Super 8 – and since we were checking in so early (around 9pm), we were able to fit in a swim before the pool closed at 10pm. The (indoor) pool was really nice and not too cold, and we had a quick dip in hot tub, with its turbo jets as well!

Thursday June 28th 2007 - Lincoln City OR to North End (Coos Bay) OR

We woke up just in time to catch the tail-end of breakfast, but hurried and had some cereal, toast and even a waffle! We then hit the hot tub in their spa. There was a sauna as well, but we didn’t check that out because we didn’t want to be sleepy all day!

We checked out and started making tracks – first checked out the water front in Lincoln City – again no swimmers, but that may have been because of the weather. There was a light drizzle, which wasn’t much fun for picture taking. I ran down to the water – it was a lot colder than it was at Long Beach the other day!

We had seen a Factory Outlet mall – which started out innocently enough, but turned out to be a very evil thing (keep reading!). We decided to stop in because we were interested in what deals we might be able to find, and it was sort of raining anyway! We had asked the hotel lady at breakfast what there was to do in Lincoln City, what it was known for, and she had mentioned this mall. The Tanger Outlet Center is the same type of thing as at Albertville, Minnesota.

Driving up, we had seen a couple of children’s stores and figured we better check them out to see what we might be able to find for Sofie (Derek’s niece). First stop – the Carter’s store. They had baby/kid’s clothes for as low as $3.99! Unreal! We found a couple items for Sofie, and I picked up a couple other things for gifts for friend’s babies (like Addison, Carolyn’s baby – just a month old!)

We then found a Columbia Sportswear outlet … I got a couple pair of shoes, and a pair of pants. Derek got an insulated water-proof jacket saving $65! After that there was the Gap Outlet … and a few other good stops too! So many bargains – incredible! And the best part – there is no tax in Oregon!!

I could have spent all day there – but finally Derek had had his fill of shopping, which was probably a good thing!

We got back on the road and continued heading south – finding several scenic points along the way. One near Myrtlewood – Cape Foulweather was discovered and named by Captain James Cook, the English explorer on March 7, 1778. The weather was particularly stormy on that day – winds up to 100 mph are not unusual. Today – there was still a mist in the air – and you literally could not see 5 feet in front of you! As a result, not many good pictures there, other than of the fog/mist.

We also stopped at the Cape Perpetua Scenic area – saw the Cook’s Chasm Bridge and watched the waves crash below us … in an “ocean geyser” (the Spouting Horn).

We stopped at Beachside – walked out to the ocean and checked out the waves again.

Having stopped at a viewpoint along the road, I had gotten talking to a couple from Alberta. They mentioned that there was a spot down the highway where we could see sea lions out on the rock. We kept our eyes open for this spot – excellent instructions – a viewpoint, right when you see the sign about the Sea Lion Caves. I have several amazing close-ups and a video of the sea lions! While there, another guy got telling us about the black birds on the rocks – that are sort of like penguins! It’s awesome that these people shared these bits of information with us – we never would have realized that that’s what we were looking at! The sea lions are very cool!

We stopped briefly at Heceta Head Lighthouse, but kept going when we realized it would be a bit of a hike – we decided we didn’t have time right now. A little further down the road, we stopped at another viewpoint and we could see the lighthouse in the distance – so that was a bonus! While there, we got talking to another couple who were just sitting watching the clouds clear, and the sun set. They were from Eugene, Oregon, but had just moved out to the coast about 4 years ago.

South of Florence, we pulled into the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, and walked out to the beach once again – the sun was about to set, and we took several pictures with the sun setting on the ocean. I saw jellyfish along the beach and in the shallow water, so wasn’t very keen on walking in the waves, but my photographer needed me walking in the water to get the proper reflections and shadows etc. We found crabs (I guess?) fully in their shell – but we think it was dead. We even saw a starfish! Another couple from Colorado was walking their dogs – they had seen the starfish too – and he said he had thrown it back in, just in case it was still alive.

We made a quick stop at the Umpqua River Lighthouse – got some night pictures of it up close – neat watching the beacon go round.

We arrived in Coos Bay fairly late and after some investigation, found the Comfort Inn in North Bend. Everything seemed to be looking pretty good – decent price with our coupon … room looked pretty okay. So we started to settle in and relax … and no sooner had Derek commended me for all the paper I pick up along the way – because this coupon thing really works, that he looks above the bed and there was a huge spider. I mean huge! He was probably about 3 inches big. You could see him across the room smiling down at us. We immediately thought of our experience with the HOJO in Toledo last summer, and groaned. We called the front desk right away. No saying, “ah, it’s just 1 [big] spider …”

The lady at the front desk was quite friendly and offered us another room right away. So we threw our stuff back in the car, got the new room and scoured it thoroughly before even bringing anything in. After a thorough inspection, the worst thing (which really wasn’t that great) we found was a network of cobwebs behind the beds, and one small spider. Derek threw the spider in the toilet, and we tried to forget some of what we had seen.

In the morning, we pulled the bed out from the wall again, and left the tv remote in the cobwebs. We’re curious what happened when they were cleaning the room the next day – we figure they either (a) wondered why the bed was pulled out, pushed it back and continued cleaning the rest of the room, (b) found the tv remote in the cobwebs (after some searching), picked it out, dusted it off and pushed the bed back in, or (c) found the cobwebs behind the bed and gave the room a thorough clean. We’re thinking probably (a) or (b)!

We have a suspicion that using a coupon at a hotel = give the customer the room with the bugs or something creepy. We’re learning …

Wednesday June 27th 2007 - Long Beach WA to Lincoln City OR

First thing we did this morning was run down to check out the continental breakfast in the office – it was alright – some toast or a bagel, donuts and a banana! It was funny though because there was barely even enough room to set your plate down while preparing your breakfast! We took our food up to our room – which was a little different.

Shortly after breakfast, we quickly checked out the pool. It was an outdoor pool, supposedly heated, but it was sure cold! Needless to say, didn’t stay too long, which was just as well because we had to get moving along.

After checking out of the hotel, we drove to the beach. We could hear it from our hotel, but it was maybe a mile away even. We had some fun walking along the shoreline and getting splashed by the waves as they crashed along the beach. The waves on Long Beach, WA are very powerful and people don’t really swim here. There were a few people on the beach, but just hanging out and watching the waves too. There were many seagulls on the beach as well.

The other neat thing here is that you can actually drive along the beach – but it’s advised that you can get stuck … and if you do, you better know your tide schedule! Having 4x4 is highly recommended! We decided not to risk anything – and also the salt is bad for the vehicle.

We strolled along the main street through Long Beach, checking out many of the little shops. We grabbed a bite to eat at a tiny diner, The Rocket Diner, with a 60s theme – we even had milk shakes!

After lunch we drove up the peninsula toward Ocean Park – where we checked out the beach there quickly, then drove the few blocks to the east side to see the bayside of the peninsula.

Leaving the Long Bay area, we drove south to the Cape Disappointment State Park. There we hiked ¾ mile up to see the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse. There was an incredible view from up on the hill, and the lighthouse was pretty cool.

We also stopped briefly at Fort Canby, and I did a quick exploration around the grounds. There is an Interpretive Center, but we did not have the time to visit - had to keep going!

From here we moved onward – to Oregon! We crossed the 4 mile bridge from Washington to Astoria, Oregon, which crosses the mouth of the Columbia.River. We drove toward the coast and continued to follow the Pacific Coast Highway (101).

The scenery along the coast is pretty cool – lots of big rocks and cliffs. And the highway hugs the coast in many places … so quite exciting!

One of first stops along the way was in the area of Cannon Beach. This beach was named after the cannon washed ashore from the U.S.S. Sloop of war ‘shark’ which was wrecked while attempting to leave the Columbia River on September 10, 1846.

Another stop was a viewpoint of “Terrible Tillie” – this is Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, which is on a lonely rock in the distance. It took 525 days to build this light station (1879-81), through 3 stubborn winters. Once built, it took a crew of four to keep up with constant needs of this ocean-besieged stone building and its critical beam of light. Over the years, it saved countless ships from crashing on the Oregon coast. The light was extinguished and replaced by a navigation mark in 1957, after seventy-seven years of service.

We also stopped along the west shoulder of Neahkahnie Mountain – at 1661 feet, one of the highest points on Oregon’s coast.

We stopped in Lincoln City to eat and sleep. We stayed at the America’s Best Inns & Suites – we had found a coupon and got the room for on only $45 + hotel tax. In search of food, we stumbled on the Chinook Winds Casino and decided to check it out quickly.

Derek was interested in trying the roulette, wanting to walk up and bet 10 bucks on black. Then walk away, win or lose. I think in the end, he did split up his bets, and at one point when he was picking random numbers, I showed up and asked how he was picking the numbers – I suggested to him that he should remember to pick “6”, being my birth date and all. As an afterthought he changed “15” to “6”, and the roulette was spun. Round and round it went … landing on …. “6”!!! So he won $30 from that! We left the table and after cashing in the chips we checked the table to see that the next to spins were “00” and then “0” – which I understand is very low odds of that happening – and if he’d kept playing, he would have likely lost chips. We later checked the odds of calling the exact number and they are like 38:1 … so I guess I’m lucky!

We left the Casino and went back to the one restaurant we had previously scoped out – only to find they had closed in the half hour we’d been away! So, we could no longer be choosy – McDonald’s drive-thru it was!

We took our grub back to the hotel, found Revenge of the Nerds on the movie channel and wound down for the night!

Tuesday June 26th 2007 - A brief tour of Seattle and then to the US Pacific Coast!

Tuesday we were up after a really good sleep - nice to be well-rested again!

We packed up and left Brent's and headed for the Space Needle - we pretty much just found it by looking up! Nearby we stumbled across a restaurant called Zeek's Pizza - so that seemed to be a must! Derek already has dreams of his own spin-off ... Deek's Pizza. We had their John Candy pizza - the food was good.

The Space Needle is in a block called Seattle Center - where there are several attractions - including the Pacific Science Center, the Experience Music Project, The Children's Museum, a terminal for the monorail, a small amusement park, an arena and stadium, the Marion Oliver McCaw hall .. and probabably more.

Seattle is huge! There are so many levels in a web of streets and freeways .. it's crazy!

We left Seattle by mid afternoon - probably right about when rush hour would be starting, but it wasn't too hard leaving the city - just get onto the interstate and way you go .. till you hit the congestion!

We made a stop in Olympia - the capital city of Washington, and saw the State and Federal Buildings. We had a bite to eat at Jack in the Box - just some fast food burgers, and back on the road. I had a toasted chicken tomato ciabatta sandwich - very tasty! Derek tried there standard feature - Big Jack (?). I think he enjoyed his first Jack in the Box experience - he's already got big ideas for his own spin-off ... Deek in the Box!

We continued heading west to Montesano, then south to Raymond, and then along the Willapa Bay to Seaview. Along the way, we stopped at Munson Falls, near Tillamook. It is the highest waterfall in the Coast Range, dropping 266 feet over rugged cliffs.

Derek had previously marked Ocean Park as an potential stop, but we decided to stay at the Rodeway Inn & Suites in Long Beach, just north of Seaside. Long Beach is at the bottom of long narrow peninsula jutting northward. (Ocean Park is just further up.)

The hotel room was really nice - it even had a chimenea with a firelog to burn! How very neat!

We could hear the waves of the Pacific Ocean - but did not walk out as the road was quite dark - and we figured we could wait till morning!

We did take a quick walk along the main street - window shopped in a few and planned for the next day!

Monday, June 25th, 2007 - another ferry ride - Seattle and a ball game!

This morning - we were up bright and early - our ferry to Anacortes, WA was leaving at 11:20am. We had made a reservation on Friday when we were at Tracy's - as there was not charge, and we wanted to ensure we were on the earliest one possible. No time to waste starting our 2nd leg of our vacation!

So I was up about 7:30 and went out for a quick walk. There was a Tim Horton's just down the street, so I set out with that as the goal. When I returned, Derek was already up - and he was quite surprised to see I had returned with coffee!

As we were cleaning up and getting ready to move out, Morgan called and unfortunately she was not going to be able to make the trip with us. She had some things to do before Thursday that were really important.

Before heading up to Sidney, we had to drop his tux off at Jeff's parents - so we had a slight detour, then we were on our way!

Our reservation indicated we should arrive about 1 hour 30 minutes before departure, so our goal was to be in Sidney by 9:30am. We were arriving there shortly after, and customs was no delay at all. The Washington State Ferry port in Sidney is very small and we were there early enough, there were no troubles!

The gift shop entertained me while we waited - Derek read his magazine.

The ferry itself was much smaller than the Spirit of Vancouver, that we had come across to Vancouver Island on. We had hotdogs for lunch (pretty much the only hot food they had on the ferry) and I walked up and down the ferry probably 100 times - around and around taking pictures. Derek took the opportunity to nap most the way.

We traveled through the San Juan Islands, and arrived in Anacortes, WA about 2:30pm.

It took a while to be free to go - we had to go through customs again - I guess they were inspecting several vehicles ahead of us - but we had no troubles at all.

We drove a short distance down Fidalgo Island to Deception Pass. This is an area where 'during his Northwest coastal explorations, Captain George Vancouver became the first European to identify the area near Whidbey Island as a passage, which he named "Deception Pass." The name "Deception Pass" derived from Captain Vancouver's realization that what he had mistaken for a peninsula was actually an island.'

We stopped quickly for another car wash and to add some tire pressure before leaving Anacortes - then on our way to Seattle.

We arrived at Brent and Jen's shortly after 6pm. He gave us a quick tour of his house - he's done lots of work so far and has plans for more - looks good so far!

Then we were off to the Mariner's game - they were playing the Red Sox. Brent and Jen knew a good sneaky place to park for free, and we bought some tickets on the street. In the end we figure we got a pretty good deal - 4th row, right field for $30. This is the season ticket price - the regular walk-up price was more, so not bad! With our new camera, we were able to get some pretty neat shots of the players, and even some of the plays!

The Mariner's won - 9-4.

Leaving the game, we had to take a detour to avoid a train that was stopped on the tracks - so we had a little more time to visit. Back at Brent's - they both had to work the next day, so everyone crashed pretty much right away.

Sunday June 24th 2007 - The wedding day

This morning we were up in decent time - and went to Denny's for breakfast with Kurt and Sandra. We had been to a Denny's in Revelstoke, and were quite impressed - Denny's is so good! Where was it yesterday?

I had tried again to get a hold of Morgan - and she called back this morning. Turned out she had some free time this morning, so she met us at Denny's as well! This was really great – I hadn’t seen her for probably over 2 years now!

We had a good visit over breakfast, then afterward, Morgan took Kurt, Sandra and I on a quick tour of Victoria. Derek had to pass because he needed to have a bit of a rest to ensure he’d look good for wedding pictures in the afternoon and not fall asleep standing up at the ceremony or something!

Morgan took us by the place where she works, which was just down the street from our hotel and Denny’s. There was a walking bridge which provided a nice view of downtown, across the Gorge Waterway and Upper Harbour. We then moved along to another location to view the Harbour. We drove downtown and looked out over the Inner Harbour .. standing by the Empress Hotel and the Legislative Building. We then drove around to Ogden Point, and walked out along the breakwater near the Cruise Ship Terminal. There was a little lighthouse at the end.

From here we realized it was time to head back to the hotel (after picking up Kurt and Sandra's rental car from Denny's) and get ready for the wedding. We were back to the hotel by 2pm.

The wedding was at 4pm at Olympic View Golf Course, on Latoria Road in the Metchosin area. The ceremony was on practice putting green, and the reception in the clubhouse. It was a very nice location .. beautiful scenery.

Derek and Lance were standing up with Jeff - they played rock, paper, scissors for best man on Friday at the rehearsal - Lance won (or lost?!). Anyway, they both said a few words. Candace had her friends Aimee and Amy standing up with her.

The dinner was delicious - they had everything! Roast beef, fish, chicken breasts, salads, potatoes, etc .. it was a buffet style dinner - for dessert, there was a variety of cheesecakes and cakes. Very yummy!

There were about 80-90 guests at the wedding - a nice size. Derek and I even tried our new moves [from our dance lessons], which was good for a few laughs - mostly Lance, as he took pictures of us mostly looking silly!

After the reception, we piled into cars that had been arranged between Candace and Jeff's families. Everyone left caught rides back to Candace's parents, where we hung around in their garage for an hour or so. I spent most the time there talking with Dave and Kelly - they live in Victoria now, but he is from Thompson, and she is actually from Russell.

After a while, her mom sent everyone on their way - and Kurt, Sandra, Derek and I got a ride back to Jeff's parent's, where I was able to get my car - and I drove Kurt, Sandra and myself back to the hotel. Derek decided to stay at Jeff's and hang out with his friends a bit longer, then caught a ride back with his friend Phil.

During our visit this morning, Morgan had expressed interest in tagging along with us to Seattle - she looked into it and figured she could make this happen - so going to sleep, I was expecting to hook up with Morgan again in the morning - and take the ferry over to Anacortes, WA. How exciting - the spontaneity of it all!

Saturday June 23rd 2007

Saturday morning – the later, waking up part of it) was quite rough for both us – mostly for Derek. ;-)

After several attempts trying to suggest that Derek get up so we can tour the city, he finally was up and moving .. but not very quickly mind you! He had to move carefully so as not to upset anything!

We drove into Victoria in search for something to eat - Derek wanted me to drive because he still wasn't feeling up to it! We never really found quite the type of restaurant we were looking for, but ended up at The White Spot. The food and service was alright, nothing special.

After brunch, we stopped at Moore's so Derek could try on his tux and make sure everything fit okay. The place was crazy, swarming with customers everywhere! We were basically on our own, trying to figure out where all the little accessories fit. But we made it out of there and everything fit fine.

For the rest of the afternoon, we made a visit to Butchart Gardens. The place is huge! Derek even enjoyed most of it - I think he mostly enjoyed getting ideas for the garden/yard.

Leaving there,we hurried back to the hotel and got ready for dinner. Tonight was dinner at Jeff's parents once again - the rehearsal dinner. We arrived around 7pm with Kurt and Sandra, who were also staying at the Traveller's Inn.

The dinner was catered and there was so much food! Roast beef, chicken breasts, fish, lasagna and many salads, etc. Too much selection to actually try everything. Most the guys who had been out the night before weren't eating too much anyway!

The rehearsal dinner even had a violinist and a bar set up in the garage!

We sat around till quite late with everyone, just visiting and having a few laughs.

Friday June 22nd 2007

Friday June 22nd 2007

Friday morning we had a bit of time to play cars with Garrett before we had to go. We had egg sandwiches for breakfast and checked the ferry times. They were leaving every hour and we were only 15 minutes away from Tsawwassen so we weren’t too worried about catching one.

We left Tracy’s around 11:30. When we were approaching the ferry terminal, the sign was flashing saying the 12pm ferry was full and the 1pm ferry was 50% full. We got our tickets and parked in line, then had a chance to run inside and check out the gift shops and buy some gelato. Mmm!

The ferry ride was about an hour and a half. I spent most the time wandering around – in and out, to the front and back. The ferry is huge! Derek and I checked out the gift shop (these turn up everywhere we go…) and even saw some whales (sort of) as we went through the islands. Derek even took the opportunity to see some sheep for a bit as well!

Arriving on Vancouver Island, we cruised down Hwy 17 to Victoria. We were now immediately on a bit of a schedule – had to get to town, check-in and hook up with the wedding people and festivities.

Our hotel – Traveller’s Inn was pretty basic but alright – not bad for $60/night … for a place to sleep. There was a small pool, but we never even had a chance to check it out – in the 3 days. The worst part was that there was no internet in the rooms. They had internet – but only in the lobby big enough to hold 3 people, and it was a computer. Any time I went down, it seemed that someone else would come along shortly after to use the internet, or the guy working would be standing at the desk, right behind me. Not as fun playing on the computer with someone watching!

We went to Jeff’s parents – the Lowes’ – for dinner. His mom (and aunts?) had prepared a bunch of salads and chicken – everything was delicious – especially the coleslaw with slices of apple in it.

After dinner the boys were heading out for a night on the town – so first they dropped me off at Candace’s parents – the Griers’, where I hooked up with the other girls for the stagette.

Candace's sisters dressed her up in a crazy outfit prior to heading out, and here mom dropped a bunch of us off at the bar. Not sure which bar this was - but it was in her parents area of the city. There was a bar and a night club downstairs.

We all had a couple drinks upsatirs then moved out and down to ensure we got into the night club before a line formed. We were downstairs and waiting for the dance floor to open - when it started, the one wall lifted and the crowd moved onto the dance floor. We had a great time!

After the partying, I was dropped off at Jeff's parents with Candace and Aimee - but I needed to take a cab home from there. Jeff's dad was up and tried to call one for me - but when he found out it'd be over an hour to an hour and a half, he offered to drive me home the the hotel. I didn't expect that, but it was nice - because it sure was nice when my head hit my pillow!

Derek rolled in some time after I had gotten back - mid early morning!

Thursday June 21st 2007

Thursday June 21st 2007

We woke to the sound of kids (Garrett and Danica) playing. They were up before 8am, and we could hear them downstairs. When we finally got up, we had some grapefruit and juice.

The day turned out to be a nice relaxing day - nice to not have hit the road for a day!

We had thought we might make it to downtown Vancouver - see Stanley Park, Gastown, etc - but we ended up staying in Surrey/White Rock instead.

Tracy packed up the kids and we went to White Rock beach ... and saw the White Rock! We also saw the shoreline and a train go by! Garrett had fun rolling down the hill with the other kids, and trying to climb the big White Rock. Danica was quite interested in the dead something (or was it seaweed? either way it was gross!) that had been washed up. The beach wasn't really sandy - more mucky than anything.

We stopped for lunch only the beach here - we took the patio (that was empty at the time) as Tracy figured that would be the least trouble to others. Oddly, the patio filled up after we got there! The day warmed up quite nicely - so the patio was a good choice!

Before these stops, we had dropped the car of at the Ford dealership (Ocean Park) - there had been a noise coming from the tires - on/off for several days - and Derek was concerned. Figured it best to get it checked out before we go further on our adventures.

Back at the house in the afternoon, Tracy took the opportunity head out to the grocery store while Derek and I watched the kids. With Danica having a nap - this meant we really only had to entertain Garrett. Derek took this opportunity to sneak upstairs for a quick nap himself. Playing cars is sure tough work!

We hadn't heard from the Ford dealership and so we decided to pick up the car before they closed - this way Derek could maybe take the wheel off himself (we were thinking there was probably just a stone in there). Regardless, we were thinking it nicer to have the car back - if they weren't going to have a chance to look at it.
So we went back at 5:30 .. and they had finished and it was ready to go! Turns out there was no stone - but something to do with the hubcap. 7 vs 9 spokes or something? Anyway, they took the hubcap off and added some foam. And it no longer made the noise (and still hasn't). We think maybe they even did all 4. All this for $78 bucks. Thankfully this went under warranty. $78 bucks! Sigh..

Uncle Gaynor and Allison came over for dinner (or supper - we had the whole discussion) that night - we had shrimp and bbq'd steaks with potatoes and caesar salad. Very good meal!

We visited a while and watched Mater and the Ghost Light a few times (again - we were watching it several times in the afternoon with Garrett too!). This is a 7 minute clip at the end of the Cars movie, and Garrett loves it. Laughs in the same spots every time! It is quite cute =)

Tracy went to sleep shortly after the kids were to bed and Uncle Gaynor and Allison had left. Derek and I stayed up to watch Studio 60.. and then Derek flipped channels a bit longer.

Again another busy day (and we didn't even drive anywhere!)

Several days to catch up! Starting with Wednesday!

We either haven't been near a computer or near one with no time for the last several days .. so now we have several updates to make!

So - let's see ..

Wednesday we woke up in Revelstoke. I was up pretty early and walked to the Tim Horton's across the street to buy a coffee for Derek. Figured that would help to make the morning happy for him - let's just say he's generally not a morning person.

We actually made it down for the continental breakfast, which often seems to be a rare thing for us. It was perfect - just what we needed - some juice and toast and cereal. Can't beat it!

We even fit in a swim this morning, before having to check out. The pool and hottub were great! The pool wasn't too cold .. again, perfect!

We made our checkout and were leaving Revelstoke before lunch.

The only thing we didn't do that would have been awesome was whitewater rafting. Of course there's whitewater rafting in many places through the mountains, but Derek had found a pamphlet for one in Revelstoke (Apex) and there was a group going out this morning at 10am, and we could have been back by 2pm. But we figured it best to hit the road, as we were planning to get to Vancouver, and didn't want to be rolling in at 1am. And we needed to allow extra time - because we are very good at finding things to do along the way.

So, we were on our way!

We stopped at a suspension bridge before Sicamous - was pretty cool - even Derek made it across - pretty impressive, as he's got this fear of heights!

At Sicamous, we stopped at a car wash - while Derek was washing the car, I called ahead to Tracy to give our eta .. when I asked for a payphone, the owner insisted I just make the call, "it's probably local anyway", he said. I told him it wouldn't be - I was calling Vancouver - and he said "well you're not going to be talking all day are you?!" So a quick free call .. should help when the cell bill comes next bill ;-P

We stopped again in Salmon Arm for some lunch - we found a Little Caesar's and picked up a $5 ready-to-go pizza - quick and simple - and we devoured it.

Driving through Sorrento - we spent some time looking for Uncle Gaynor's cabin - I kind of remembered where it would be, but just couldn't find the spot. Turns out we were close - we were to turn at the burnt out Shell station - and apparently we were right there and Derek had remembered seeing it. Oh well, next time!

We made our way to Kamloops, then on to the Coquihalla. Derek said after his fingers were white - he was gripping the steering wheel so tight!

We stopped in Hope, and ended up finding the Othello Tunnels in the Coquihalla Mountain. This guy (can't remember who right now) had recognized that the area was in threat of being taken over by the Americans - it was easier for them to come up for trade, and so we needed a way to ensure trains could get through the mountains easier. Tunnels were blasted through the mountains (perfectly aligned) and bridges built across the canyons. This saved many miles when trying to get through the mountains at this point. And so, Canada was saved! ;-)

We made it to Tracy's that evening - and sat up for a couple hours visiting, then off to bed by 11pm! We were exhausted!

Deeks Summary

Hey there, whomever is lucky enought o find this blog of our adventures .. here is a quick (man style) summary of our trip thus far.

Day one, we drove to the farm .. dropped off Oscar and had a rest before our 17 day road trip. Accomodations were nice, meal was included and the B&B hosts were friendly.

Day two, we left the farm later than I had hoped, but this is our holidays so we really don't keep track of time other than we have to be at Jeff & Candace's wedding on Vancouver Island the 24th of June. Anyhow, we made tracks through Stoughton (a place I had lived at while working as a rig pig back in the late 90's) had a great supper at Georges restuarant, being fathers day the place was packed. After hitting the road we made it to Swift Current Saskatchewan, decided to go cheap and stay at a 2 star hotel ... one star for having a roof and one star for having wireless internet ... other than that I would say stay away from this place ... I wore my socks in the shower .. nuff said!

Day three had us on the road again .. we drove to the bad lands of Alberta, north of the #1 hwy by a little bit, but definitely worth it .. the scenery was very impressive. Luanne was more adventurous than I when it came to getting close to the edge of some of the cliffs ... you should see the pictures! We also visited the dinosaur info booth and took a self guided tour of the lower bad lands .. again, you need to see the pictures.

After leaving the park we made our way to Calgary .. home of the flaming flames .. our only stop was at a tall tower with a 360 degree look out tower .. this was very cool .. except the part of the glass floor .. that was too much for me .. I stayed clear. You could see miles in all directions, the mountains were obviously very nice .. but what stood out more was the amount of construction going on in Calgary ... there were cranes everywhere!

We left the tower, and made our way to Banff national park ... a highlight of any trip. We set up camp, and then toured Banff the town to see what was going on. I had been there in the early 90's on a ski trip with some pals, and not a lot has really changed ... very touristy in nature and a lot of upscale hotels on the strip ... I can't imagine what real estate would cost there, but I am sure it would be worth every penny (if i had that many pennies).

The next morning we woke up frozen like popsicles ... I had not taken into consideration the mountains and everything so a bit of a learning curve was had. Nature 1, naive Manitobans 0.

A quick tear down and a few pictures later and we were on our way to Banff to check things out ... after a few hours shopping (a few hours too many in my humble opinion) we checked out the scenery offered by such a beautiful setting. First the Bow River rapids and then a cruise to the golf course ... followed by a dip in the Upper Hot Springs.

It was now time to hit the road again .. next stop, who knows. We headed west and drove through some crazy turns and hills. I kept thinking these truck drivers are nuts! Some slopes were roller coaster like ... with turns that produced 2 or 3 G's at least!

After it got dark we decided to find a place to sleep .. learning from our earlier experience of saving money by staying at a cheap motel we decided to look around ... we checked out every Hotel/Motel in Revelstoke and came up to the Motel 8 ... I said to Luanne "Lets stay here if its 88$ or less", she agreed .. I went inside to see how much a room was and beleive it or not, it was 88$ .. normally a 100$ was put on special that night ... fate was playing around this night ... and let me tell you, we were appreciative. The room was super clean, the breakfast was simple yet filling, a Tim Hortons shares the same parking lot and the pool/hot tub was much needed!!

Ok, so this quick man style summary has turned out to be anything but ... so thanks for reading it and stay tuned for an update from our next destination .. Vancouver!

Derek, over and out.

Tuesday

I woke up around 9:30, but went back to bed just because I was still so cold! Then I didn't wake up till 11:00! Check-out time! Yikes!

So we were up with a start and began dismantling the tent and packing sleeping bags, etc. I was looking forward to a shower, but alas, we had forgotten to bring towels. Crap!

I took a quick walk down to the lake (Two Jack Lake) and took some pictures.

We were set to go by about noon, which wasn't a problem. It was still quite chilly when we were leaving the campground and heading into town.

In the town of Banff, we parked the car near Banff Avenue and then walked the street. They were doing construction on this street, so it was quite a mess!

Derek found a coin set with Oilers log on the quarter - he had to have this!

We stopped for lunch at Wild Bill's Saloon. We sat on the patio, which was nice but maybe not the best choice because we were still chilled from the night before! I had BBQ beef on a bun w/ caesar salad and Derek had a steak sandwich with mashed potatoes. Both were very good!

We continued walking along Banff Avenue - I picked up a necklace and bracelet, some postcards and pins, some Rocky Mountain soap and a few miscellaneous other things. Derek found a cowboy hat - just the type he was looking for in Calgary.

Finally - enough shopping - we made a stop at Bow Falls. We walked a short ways up the hill .. got some pictures of the falls, and of the Fairmont Hotel - Banff.

We took a quick drive up Bow Drive (?) and saw the golf course -- also very nice! And probably expensive!

We visited the Upper Hot Springs - the water was 39 degrees .. very nice and warm!

We left Banff around suppertime and headed up the highway.

We made a quick stop at Lake Louise.

We continued on - stopping along the highway at the Spiral Tunnels. Lots of history here, and I was able to zoom in on the tracks with my new camera!

We stopped in Golden at Timmies - almost tipped the car making the turn when Derek saw it at the last second .. and continued on our way to Glacier National Park. The hotel at Roger's Pass was going to be $100 ($125 reg). We stopped at Iss... campground - had thought we might camp there .. but the park isn't open for another week. Oh well. Probably too cold anyway.

We continued on our way to Revelstoke - finding a great place at Super 8 - $88 with a pool, hot tub, warm cozy bed, wireless internet, nice room, Timmies next door and Denny's (24 hours) across the street! Perfect!

Monday - good driving day!

Monday we left Swift Currant and made it to Banff by end of day.

It was cold in Swift Currant when we got up. We got up pretty quickly and hurried to get out of our motel .. it was actually called Caravel motel, not an EconoLodge. But much the same idea anyway. It was a place to sleep .. not much else!

We stopped at Timmie's just down the service road .. a long line .. Derek got chatting and making friends with everyone in line!

Finally on our way, we made tracks to the SK/AB border. Quick stop at the Welcome Centre. We made a bit of a detour up to the Dinosaur Provincial Park. Saw some amazing scenery, and our new camera has an incredible zoom!

Back on our way, we arrived in Calgary by around supper time. We went straight to the Calgary Tower. $27 for 2 people, but no lines or anything. The view was nice .. pretty neat to be so far above. I stood out on the Glass Floor .. right above the street. Derek just took pictures of this - too much for him, being afraid of heights like he is!

Back on the ground, we spent a bit of time wandering around downtown, looking for a cowboy hat for Derek, but most shops were closed.

We headed out of Calgary, no time to stop at the Olympic Park (another trip!) and headed for Banff.

Arriving in Banff, we went straight to our campsite - Two Jack Lakeside - and they still had room! We set up our tent just as it was getting dark!

We had a quick drive into town - looking for matches and wireless internet - only successful on the matches!

We tried to have a fire, but to no avail - most the wood was damp, and not much kindling available. That was too bad, as it was quite chilly and we were looking forward to it to be able to warm up!

Even the tent was cold .. slept with 2 pairs of socks (including my warmest socks) on and my feet were still cold!

Loadin' up and truckin'

We're heading out .. a timmies just next door, and on our way to Medicine Hat, Calgary ...

Westward Bound

After a late (early) arrival at the farm Saturday night, and a bit of a rest, we had a hearty brunch while briefly celebrating Derek's (37th) birthday and Father's Day with my parents. Oscar was around for some of the party, but he actually spent most of the time under the couch downstairs .. still warming up to the strange new place!

We hit the road about 2pm, heading straight west on the Eton Road. We stopped quickly in Killarney for a quick car wash, then continued on our way. We followed #3 to Deloraine and then north to #2, which then followed straight into Saskatchewan.

We stopped for fuel in Stoughton, SK and decided to stop for a bite to eat. We ate at George's Family Restaurant - and the food was excellent! Derek had a chicken cordon bleu and I had an 8 oz steak. This was Derek's birthday supper, so nice that it turned out to be very good.

We continued on our way to Weyburn, and then on our way to Moose Jaw, we somehow made a wrong move and ended up straight into Regina! So a bit further, but same end result ! It was about 10pm (SK time - no daylight savings) by the time we got to Moose Jaw, and we decided to drive another 1-1/2 hours to Swift Currant. We figured this would put us in good shape for Monday morning.

We checked a couple hotels that were going to be $90 (with pool) and then settled on the EconoLodge for $65 - figured we could save $30 and we were primarily interested in a good sleep anyway.

It rained through the night - rained through parts of Saskatchewan as we were driving through in the afternoon as well.

Anyway - time to get ready for a new day of driving! The plan is to reach Banff!
